Lithium-ion battery cells are filled with an electrolyte during production to allow the ions in the cell to move between the cathode and anode. After this filling, the cell needs some time to absorb the electrolyte into the pores. This process, known as "formation", is time-consuming, but also has a major influence on the subsequent performance of the cell. EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) can characterise this process and be used for process optimisation.
