For several decades, the aggressive spread of the species Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) in some areas of the tropics and subtropics has led to major ecological and socio-economic problems. In the studies carried out here, this plant was used as a starting material for hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC).
