R&D in the field of biopolymers is a strategic focus at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP). The synthetic biopolymer polylactide (PLA), which currently has the greatest volume potential among synthetic biopolymers, has a prominent position here. Miniplant systems (unpressurised and pressurised) with a volume of up to 25 litres are used to synthesise different types of PLA for various applications beyond the laboratory scale.
