Cole-Parmer BM-400 Mixer/Mill®
Cole-Parmer BM-400 Mixer/Mill®
The Cole-Parmer BM-400 Mixer/Mill® high-energy ball mill (formerly the SPEX SamplePrep 8000M Mixer/Mill®) – grinding, mixing and mechanical alloying with a single grinding vessel. The unique grinding motion of the BM-400 Mixer/Mill resembles the shape of a horizontal figure of eight, making it the industry standard in the field of ‘mechanical alloying’. The operating time for this application can be extended to up to 10,500 minutes. Other areas of application include the grinding of rock, ceramics and slag. Grinding vessels made of steel, agate, tungsten carbide, zirconium and plastic can be used in various volumes up to a maximum of 50 ml.
Product Description
When it comes to above-average efficiency with very high energy input and long grinding times, the Cole-Parmer BM-400 Mixer/Mill® is the first choice among high-energy ball mills. Together with the larger “BM-450 Mixer/Mill®” model, the BM-400 Mixer/Mill® represents the standard for the “mechanical alloying” application area. The mill is structurally and mechanically designed for long operating times and works for up to 100 minutes at a time as standard, but can also be operated for up to 1,000 or 10,500 minutes at a time without interruption by simple “chip tuning “*.
During operation, the grinding bowl undergoes an eight-shaped movement, the proportional horizontal movement of the grinding bowl and an additional movement (forwards/backwards) generate very high forces each time the grinding balls hit the grinding bowl wall. The samples are ground and mixed or mechanically alloyed quickly and finely by these high forces. This mill is therefore also ideal for grinding hard, brittle material up to a maximum available sample volume of approx. 20-50 ml, depending on the grinding container, or for mixing powders up to a volume of approx. 75 ml. Grinding can be carried out both dry and wet, with or without grinding aids, depending on requirements.
Various grinding and mixing containers with different volumes and made of different materials are available for a wide range of samples and a wide variety of mixing and grinding tasks; further details are listed under “Options/Accessories”. Only one grinding container can be used in the Cole-Parmer BM-400 Mixer/Mill® at a time. For smaller grinding/mixing vessels, multi-adapters are available for the simultaneous holding and parallel processing of 4 or 7 vessels.
The operation of the Cole-Parmer BM-400 Mixer/Mill® is extremely simple: the prepared grinding set with the sample and the grinding balls is closed and inserted into the clamping device of the mill in just a few seconds and the mill is ready to start. The desired grinding time is entered using the keypad on the front of the appliance, and an electronic timer ensures reproducible conditions. For the operator’s safety, the appliance door remains closed during operation thanks to a safety mechanism and only opens again after the time has elapsed or after manual cancellation by the user.
Typical application areas: Mechanical alloying, wet and dry grinding, mixing and emulsifying
Typical sample spectrum: Rock, minerals, sand, cement, slag, ceramics, catalyst carriers, glass, pharmaceuticals, plant, animal and human samples, cannabis, paints and varnishes.
