Electrochemistry in a pressure reactor / autoclave
Electrochemistry in a pressure reactor / autoclave
Electrochemical synthesis, the characterisation of catalysts, corrosion measurements or fundamental research into new electroactive species can be carried out even at high pressures and temperatures above room temperature using a Gamry Instruments potentiostat in a Büchi autoclave.Given the enormous amount of energy stored at high pressure and high temperature, safety is always the top priority for any application in an autoclave. Our autoclaves from Büchi Glas Uster are fitted with the appropriate measuring and safety devices as standard. Thanks to the comprehensive range of vessels available, you can always conduct your experiment in the smallest possible volume.
Pressure-tight cable glands allow the samples to be connected to the potentiostat without compromising on temperature or pressure ranges. These are available in reactor materials such as stainless steel, Hastelloy, etc., or with inert systems and sealing materials such as PTFE, neoprene or Viton. Depending on the material, pressures of several hundred bar and temperatures of several hundred °C are possible. Not only can cables be routed through, but also round or square geometries, such as various measuring probes.
Product Description
For applications in an autoclave at high pressure and high temperature, safety is always the top priority.
In addition to the administrative requirements for authorisation and laboratory equipment, the following points on “best practice” make working easier:
1. if possible, always use the smallest vessel that fulfils the requirements of the experiment
2. continuous monitoring of temperature and pressure
3. safety shutdown in the event of overheating
4. monitoring and limiting heating elements
5. use bursting discs and pressure relief vessels
6. appropriately securing accessories (thermocouples or electrodes)
7. safe supply and discharge, especially of toxic or corrosive media
With an autoclave from Büchi Glas Uster, you can prioritise safety as required and, thanks to the comprehensive selection, your experiment can always take place in the smallest possible volume.
The combination with a Gamry potentiostat is ensured by the floating mass of all Gamry systems in order to obtain the correct measurement result even with earthed electrodes. To be able to start your electrochemical experiment in the autoclave, you need a pressure-resistant cable feed-through for the 2-, 3- or even 4-electrode configuration.
The application note “The Art of Electrochemistry in an Autoclave” provides further information on this area of application.
C3 Prozess- und Analyentechnik GmbH has been servicing Büchi Glas Uster pressure reactors and Gamry Instruments electrochemistry for many years. This puts us in a position to provide our customers with optimum advice and solutions from a single source.
