Hot Disk – Measurement modules

Product archive | Hot Disk AB, Wärmeleitfähigkeitsmessgerät | Topic: Hot Disk - Software / Measuring modules
These modules open up a wide range of applications for a variety of samples and a wide range of questions relating to thermal conductivity

With the optional measurement modules, you can adapt your Hot Disk measuring instrument to a variety of – often complex – applications. For example, measurements on anisotropic samples or thin films/coatings are possible.

Product Description

Single side test

available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S, TPS 2200S, TPS 1500, TPS 500S, TPS 500 – this software module is already included in the respective basic version

If only one sample is available, this sample can still be measured using the hot disc technique. The use of a (known) material with low thermal conductivity as a second sample allows the measurement with slightly reduced accuracy. This method is already included in the basic version of all hot disc systems – except the M1. The best results with this technique are achieved on samples with thermal conductivities greater than 1 W/mK.

One-dimensional module

available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S, TPS 2200S, TPS 1500 and TPS 500S – this software module is already included in the respective basic version

This module is used to determine the thermal conductivity of highly conductive rod-shaped samples; it determines the thermal values along the rod-shaped sample. With this technique, the sensor diameter of the hot disc sensor is selected according to the diameter of the rod-shaped sample. Samples from 1.5 mm diameter and from 4 mm length can be measured in this way.

Anisotropy module

optionally available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500, TPS 2200S, TPS 1500

The anisotropy module allows the direction-dependent determination of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity. These are determined axially (through the plane of the sample) and radially (in the plane of the sample). Knowledge of the heat capacity is required to use this technique. If this is not known, the “high-precision cp determination” module can be used.
The anisotropy technique can also be combined with the “single side test”, but the use of two samples is recommended.

Slab module

optionally available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S, TPS 2200 and TPS 500S

Slab technology is for disc and plate-shaped samples with high thermal conductivity (λ > 5 W/mK). Only the thickness of the sample must be known, typical samples are e.g. wafers or highly conductive materials from the electronics industry.

Thin film module

optionally available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S and TPS 2200
This module can be used to measure foils and films or coatings on highly conductive substrates. The thermal contact resistance is measured and the thermal conductivity is determined by knowing the exact film thickness. The permissible thicknesses are between approx. 20 and 500 µm, the λ values can be between 0.01 and 5 W/mK.

cp module

optionally available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S, TPS 2200 and TPS 1500, also available to a limited extent for TPS 500S
For standard measurements, the Hot Disk basic software determines the cp value (per unit volume) from the ratio of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity. The cp module is available for high-precision cp measurements. The sample, which can be up to approx. 1 cent in size, is measured in a gold cell. Due to the relatively high sample weight, very precise and representative values for cp are obtained. Bulk materials with good thermal conductivity can also be measured as cubic centimetre-sized sample pieces (e.g. cylindrical) without using the gold cell.

Structural Probe Module

optionally available for TPS 3500 and TPS 2500S
If the specific heat capacity is known, this technique enables the thermal conductivity to be determined as a function of the penetration depth into the sample. The technique can therefore be used to analyse defects or inhomogeneities, e.g. in the field of non-destructive quality testing.

Low-Density / Highly Insulation Module

optionally available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S, TPS 2200 and TPS 1500
When measuring extremely poor heat conductors with low density, such as aerogels, the heat dissipation via the sensor or the sensor cables begins to influence the measurement. This module enables a corresponding correction and thus the precise determination of the thermal conductivity of highly thermally insulating materials.

Automation module

optionally available for TPS 3500, TPS 2500S, TPS 2200 and TPS 1500
For use in QA and QC, this module enables the control, test control and evaluation of the TPS system via a TCP/IP protocol in the network. It is also used when direct access to the system is not possible or desired for security reasons
