ALS Glass Carbon
ALS Glass Carbon
ALS Various glassy carbon products, such as films, sheets, powders and rods, for use as working or counter electrodesCarbon glass is a material made of pure carbon that has a unique structure. Thanks to its specific properties, it is ideally suited for use as an inert working or counter electrode in a variety of applications.
Product Description
It combines properties such as glass-like hardness with those of graphite. However, unlike graphite, it has a highly disordered microstructure consisting of basal and edge planes.
This results in the great variety of its positive material properties.
Glassy carbon is very resistant. Corrosion resistance is given in air up to approx. 500°C and under vacuum or inert gas up to over 3000°C. Unlike most ceramic or metallic materials, the compressive, tensile and flexural strength of glassy carbon increases as the temperature rises. At approx. 2400°C, glassy carbon has approx. twice the strength of glassy carbon at room temperature. Due to its high thermal shock resistance, rapid heating and cooling times are also possible.
Due to its high purity, chemical resistance and very low permeability to gases and solutions, glassy carbon is ideally suited for use as a working electrode in electrochemistry.
Due to its high hardness and strength, glassy carbon can be polished very well and produces very good surfaces. The good electrical conductivity, good di-electrical behaviour and good bio-compatibility complete the positive properties.
