BPC 2 – Gas metering unit for reliable and reproducible hydrogenation

The Büchi BPC 2, comprising a gas regulation and control unit, is a fully integrated gas dosing system designed for the safe and reproducible performance of hydrogenation and oxidation reactions (polymerisation), as well as for catalyst research. This unique volumetric dosing system is characterised by high reproducibility and dosing accuracy.

Product Description

The Büchi BPC 2, consisting of a gas regulator and control unit, is a fully integrated gas dosing system for the safe and reproducible performance of hydrogenations, oxidation reactions (polymerisation) and for catalyst research.

A complete turnkey Büchi hydrogenation solution consisting of:

– BPC 2 (Büchi pressflow gas controller) for hydrogen dosing, reaction pressure control and continuous recording of hydrogen uptake up to saturation

– Büchi pressurised reactors or stirred autoclaves, available in different volumes and materials for low to high pressure applications

The unique volumetric dosing system of the BPC 2 is characterised by high reproducibility, dosing accuracy and consumption measurement over a wide gas dosing range. This robust technology is based on the predecessor model
bpc, which has proven itself worldwide in research, process development, scale-up, process optimisation and small-scale production in pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. It is also often used for testing catalysts or polymerisation processes.
The Büchi complete solution fulfils the highest safety standards for hydrogenation in the low-pressure and high-pressure range. Various system components trigger an immediate shutdown of the gas supply line. Gas leakage sensors, pressure and temperature sensors ensure monitoring and communicate with the safety processor of the BPC. This closes the valves in the event of deviations from the set parameters.

The reactors are prepared accordingly for catalytic hydrogenation. Büchi offers various solutions for homogeneous and heterogeneous caralysers, such as catalyst baskets and pressure burettes. The gas can be introduced via gassing stirrers or classically near the stirrer. Reactor design and sensors allow the reaction to be controlled in the event of exothermic reactions.
The BPC 2 system is simple and safe to operate. The hydrogen uptake is continuously measured and recorded until saturation or other predefined limit values are reached. The reaction process is displayed graphically.
The volumetric dosing system enables high-precision hydrogen addition over a wide dosing range thanks to 2 possible control methods:

– constant reaction pressure
– constant gas flow

The added volumes of gases such as H2, O2, ethylene, propylene, etc. are measured and recorded. The amount of active gas consumed is displayed in ml or mol.

Standard functions

– Hydrogenations under pressure at 0.5 to 140 bar
– Continuous recording of hydrogen consumption (or other gas)
– Measurement of gas quantity, consumption in mol, ml (mln, ln)
– Automatic switch-off function when the set dosed gas quantity is reached
– Control and maintenance of the desired reaction pressure during the experiment
– Simple operation / clear presentation via touch screen display
– Graphical representation of the reaction kinetics
– Data storage on USB memory stick
– Many safety functions (e.g. leakage sensor, auto switch-off function, etc.)
– Quick filling mode

Options and Accessories

• Measuring and displaying pressure and temperature is standard! Additional signals, such as stirrer speed, can be integrated into the BPC 2 via optional adapters, and emergency stop circuits can also be implemented via digital outputs.

• Additional gases: ethylene, propylene, CO and CO2. An optional
module can be activated for these gases, so that the quantities consumed are displayed in ml or mol, specific to each gas.

• Automatic functions such as nitrogen purging, inerting

• Sequence programme (including drain valve) for defining individual process steps with the option to link them together; example of sequences for preparing the system prior to hydrogenation:
– Step: Purge
system with nitrogen– Step: Check
system for leaks– Step: Purge system with active gas

• RS232 / Ethernet connection to bls software with the option of remote control and data logging of up to 16 channels on a PC, thermostat setpoint specification, etc.
