Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC isothermal dual-channel cement, mortar and concrete calorimeter
Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC isothermal dual-channel cement, mortar and concrete calorimeter
Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC – the isothermal heat flow calorimeter with two measurement stations and a sample volume of up to 2 x 125 ml for cement, mortar and concrete samplesThe quantitative and qualitative properties of mortar and concrete products depend largely on the mixing energy generated during the manufacturing process as a result of the addition of aggregates and in relation to their particle size. Consequently, the measurement of heat flow energy in cementitious systems should preferably be carried out using mortar or concrete samples. With a sample volume of up to 125 ml, the Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC isotherm two-channel mortar and concrete calorimeter just like the other two HPC models—the I-Cal 4000 HPC with four and the I-Cal 8000 HPC with eight measuring stations—is suitable for determining the heat of hydration of cement paste, mortar and even concrete, including coarse aggregates.
Product Description
Hydraulic binders such as cement react exothermically with water during setting. The hydration enthalpy released correlates with the strength values. These enthalpies are measured using calorimetry. Modern heat flow calorimeters record this heat development in a user-friendly manner and online. They thus provide both qualitative and quantitative information on the time course and extent of the reactions taking place. They have gained great importance in the field of QC as well as in the development of additives, for example, and are already being used as an alternative to the classic reference methods.
Quantitative and qualitative properties of mortar and concrete products largely depend on the mixing energy, which is generated by the addition and depending on the aggregate during the manufacturing process.
Accordingly, the measurement of heat flow energy in cementitious systems should preferably be carried out using mortar or concrete samples.
With a sample volume of up to 125 ml, the Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC isothermal two-channel mortar and concrete calorimeter, just like the two other HPC models I-Cal 4000 HPC with four or the I-Cal 8000 HPC with eight measuring stations, is suitable for determining the heat of hydration of cement paste, mortar and even concrete including coarse aggregates. This makes the I-Cal 2000 HPC fully compatible with the ASTM C1679, ASTM C1702, ASTM C563 and EN 196-11 standards.
The I-Cal 2000 HPC operates isothermally in the temperature range 5°C to 70°C, has two thermally decoupled measuring stations (cross-talk < 0.1%), each of which is coupled with a variable reference in twin design. The respective “reference sample” consists of three metal discs, mounted on a holder, and its thermal mass can be quickly and variably adapted to the sample volume or its mass. The vessels, each with a sample volume of up to 125 ml, offer enough leeway to be able to analyse systems with coarse aggregates. Plastic beakers with lids or stainless steel vessels with plastic lids can be used as sample vessels.
The Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC concrete calorimeter has a highly accurate and extremely stable air thermostat in order to be able to measure with long-term stability and a minimal signal-to-noise ratio. The abbreviation “HPC” in this context stands for “High Performance Calorimeter”. The Calmetrix I-Cal 2000 HPC calorimeter is operated with the application-orientated CalCommander software from Calmetrix. The individual software modules control the measurement and enable the generation of reports as well as the calculation of the setting time and strength, the optimisation of the sulphate content, the calculation of the activation energy and the quantitative determination of the heat of hydration in accordance with ASTM C1702. Once started, the heat of hydration is recorded online. The measurement data thus provides both qualitative and quantitative information on the time course and extent of the reactions taking place as well as the hydration enthalpy released.
If more measuring channels are required for a higher sample throughput and smaller sample volumes (20 ml) are sufficient, the Calmetrix I-Cal Ultra isothermal multi-channel calorimeter with 8 positions can be a good alternative. However, if the available sample volume needs to be even larger (up to 2x 450 ml), the Calmetrix I-Cal Flex isothermal multi-channel calorimeter can be used.
