The Cole-Parmer CG-400 Freezer/Mill® (formerly SPEX 6785 Freezer/Mill) – the first choice for grinding sample quantities between 0.1 and 100 g when dealing with temperature-sensitive samples or samples that cannot be ground at room temperature.

The entry-level model for large sample volumes from the Freezer/Mill range is filled manually with liquid nitrogen. The continuous cooling of the grinding chamber, the robust mechanism with just one moving part, and the intuitive touchscreen controls ensure maximum efficiency and durability.

Product Description

Comminution and homogenisation of soft, flexible or heat-sensitive materials is often a problem in the laboratory. Many samples such as polymers, food, biological samples or active pharmaceutical ingredients cannot be comminuted conventionally at room temperature due to their consistency or heat sensitivity.

The grinding principle is as ingenious as it is simple – the grinding container, which is fitted with the sample and a rod-shaped, magnetisable grinding tool and sealed with end caps that can also be magnetised, is inserted into a holder in the mill, which is enclosed by two magnetic coils. During the entire grinding process, everything is immersed in liquid nitrogen, which is located in the lower, very well insulated part of the mill. This ensures the cooling and embrittlement of a sample previously introduced at room temperature as well as the permanent cooling of the material to be ground during the grinding process. Grinding is carried out continuously at a constantly low temperature (-196°C), whereby the sample itself does not come into direct contact with the liquid nitrogen and is therefore free of contamination.A complete grinding programme is made up of several sections and cycles, all grinding parameters (pre-cooling time, grinding time per cycle, holding time, number of grinding cycles, grinding speed) are simply entered via an LCD touchscreen. They can be stored as retrievable grinding programmes and run automatically when the respective programme is started. This enables short set-up times and reproducible grinding results.During the actual grinding process, only the grinding tool inside the grinding container is moved back and forth in a magnetic field, crushing the sample material at both ends of the container. There is no mechanical stress on the grinder and therefore hardly any wear. If the lid of the grinder is opened while grinding is in progress, the grinder switches off immediately via appropriate safety devices. The grinder also switches off if the level of liquid nitrogen has dropped too low.

The Cole-Parmer CG-400 Freezer/Mill® cryogenic mill is filled manually with liquid nitrogen. The device has a grinding chamber and can hold all available grinding vessels with a capacity of 0.1 to 100 g or three micro grinding vessels of the micro grinding set with a capacity of 3 x 0.1 to 0.5 g. The user can choose from a variety of different grinding containers in terms of material and volume, depending on the sample quantity or requirements for the subsequent analysis. Due to its capabilities, the Cole-Parmer CG-400 Freezer/Mill® cryogenic mill is often seen as the last alternative for sample preparation when all else fails…
